The objectives of the Washington Avenue-Prospect Heights Association (WAPHA) are:
- To increase awareness of the Crown Heights/Prospect Heights neighborhood and the businesses located therein
- To work with state, city and local agencies, as well as other civic organizations in furthering the interests of the members of the Association
- To provide philanthropic opportunities to the members of the Association
- To attract additional businesses to Washington Avenue
Marketing and Promotions
Marketing and promotional activities include the Wash Ave newsletter, Sip & Shop Washington Avenue and Washington-Avenue.org.
November 2008 marked the first issue of the quarterly Wash Ave newsletter, a publication informing the community about merchant-related news, events and sales. Now semi-monthly, the Wash Ave will be distributed throughout the local neighborhoods. At the start of the 2008 holiday season, WAPHA sponsored Sip & Shop Washington Avenue to promote seasonal specials and to celebrate the arrival of the holiday light streamers. Last May, WAPHA partnered with Heart of Brooklyn to launch the Extraordinary Places in the Heart of Brooklyn coupon booklet. Participants include over 20 Washington Avenue businesses. Future programs and activities include a neighborhood brochure, and map; launching of an e-newsletter; and planning for a street fair.
Cleaning, Maintenance and Beautification
Cleaning, maintenance and beautification are essential in the upkeep of the business corridor. As advocates for a cleaner and more attractive Washington Avenue, WAPHA supports the NYC Clean Streets program – a New York City Small Business Services (SBS) initiative. As a recipient of the Avenue NYC's NYC Clean Street Award, Washington Avenue has received free supplementary cleaning services, which with the financial support of merchants and property owners will continue in 2009. In celebration of the winter holidays, WAPHA hangs streaming lights along the corridor. WAPHA also partners with SBS and BEDC to upgrade storefronts and awnings. Future plans for the cleaning, maintenance and beautification of Washington Avenue include tree plantings and new Street Banners featuring merchant logos.
